Pioneers crossing the wide-open prairies and settling the frontier are as Americana as apple pie. The freedom of the frontier is a common theme in many stories, but especially within the Little House books. Laura Ingalls Wilder began her stories from her youthful recollections, and these tales eventually developed into the Little House on the Prairie book series. Writing on the Frontier - a Historical Children's Memoir Workshop will plum the banks of the writer's memories with two workshops designed to produce the foundational elements of a historical novel. Adventurers will visit Laura Ingalls Wilder Home & Museum during Wilder Days and Dogwood Canyon Nature Park--a nature reserve that will make you feel like you have stepped inside a picture book. The beauty of the heartland will flavor your words and enrich your own Little House stories. Branson offers activities and natural wonders that will transform your visit into an unforgettable adventure.

  • 1 PM - 3 PM | Session One - Once there was a Little house . . .

    • A long time ago, when all of the grandfathers and grandmothers of today were little boys and little girls or very small babies, or perhaps not even born, Pa and Ma and Mary and Laura and Baby Carrie left their little house in the Big Woods of Wisconsin.   The opening line to Little House on the Prairie introduces the characters and sets the stage.  This two-hour session will establish the mood, setting, and characters of your historical novel.  We will conduct multiple exercises individually and as a group to help explore your memories.    â€‹

  • 4 PM - 6 PM | Session Two - Beyond the Prairie Grasses . . .
    • Laura began to drift over endless waves of prairie grasses, and Pa’s voice went with her, singing...   The closing line to Little House on the Prairie was not a conclusion to Laura’s life but merely a stop to that chapter of her story. This two-hour session will help you determine where you want to conclude your historical novel. We will conduct multiple exercises individually and as a group to help explore your memories. I will also give direction for how you can utilize the excursions to trigger your memories and be inspired.
